Study introduces new internet addiction spectrum: where are you on the scale?
A new study from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has introduced a unique internet addiction spectrum. According to the research, young people (24 and under) are online for an average of six hours a day, mostly on smartphones, while those 24 and older spend 4.6 hours. The study, led by Dr Brigitte Stangl, categorises users into five groups: Casual users, Initial users, Experimenters, Addicts-in-denial, and Addicts. Interestingly, the study found that internet addiction decreases with age and is not influenced by gender. Dr Stangl concluded:
"Our study underscores the need for tailored interventions and support for individuals at various stages of internet addiction. The findings will certainly influence the design and development of digital services and AR applications, ensuring they cater to the diverse needs of users in the current digital environment."
